Every Woman Counts
My name is Alexis Hutson, I am currently a Senior at Augustana College. In my lifetime I have watched four very important women fight a long journey of breast cancer. I am so thankful to say that each one of them has won their fight and to this day am able to say they are survivors. I got lucky. Over the last two terms I have had the privilege to be able to work with Susan G. Komen Greater Iowa in completeling my Senior Inquiry project. As students approach their senior year they are required to take a senior inquiry class based on their major. Mine is about Civic Engagement and reaching out to the community. I want to make an impact in the fight against breast cancer! I want to help Susan G. Komen Greater Iowa save lives and end breast cancer forever. I’m taking my first step towards a world without breast cancer by raising funds to stop this disease.
Did you know?
• 1 in 8 women will develop invasive breast cancer during her lifetime
• Women with an immediate blood relative are twice as likely to develop the disease
• It is estimated that more than 50,000 cases of non-invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2017
What I am doing
In the past two terms I have been able to attend numerous health fairs to spread awareness in the goal to end Breast Cancer. In most cases of Breast Cancer, some women receive late detection because they are not able to receive a Mammogram. My goal is to raise enough money to pay for 10 Mammograms; this is where I need your help. I have set a goal of raising $1250 and would appreciate your donations. Every dollar counts. Susan G. Komen funds more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit, while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Because of my Aunt, my two best friends' moms and one of my favorite high school teachers, I have been so passionate about this cause. They have inspired me to never lose hope and to always fight like a girl.
